Types of Gas
Natural Gas – Fossil fuel from the ground, transported through pipelines network.
LNG - Liquefied Natural Gas, natural gas formed into the liquid state. Growing fuel use, reduced carbon dioxide to natural gas.
CNG - Compressed Natural Gas, less carbon, limited flammability
LPG - Liquefied Petroleum Gas, propane or butane. Created by refining petroleum or "wet" natural gas.
In addition to their chemical differences, LPG and natural gas also vary in terms of energy content, gas/air combustion mixes, and working pressure. While LPG is typically stored in gas bottles or cylinders, natural gas is transported through pipelines.
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is natural gas that has been transformed into a liquid state through a cooling process. It has been a significant component of the UK's energy portfolio for several years. However, the question remains: could LNG be the fossil fuel that has not yet realised its full potential as we transition towards cleaner, low-carbon energy systems? Producing 30% less carbon dioxide than oil, 40% less than coal and less soot and dust.
Compressed natural gas (CNG) is commonly utilised as a substitute fuel to power vehicles, but its applications extend beyond transportation. It can also be used for power generation, water heating, and air conditioning. CNG is an alternative fuel that is not only cost-effective but also readily available and provides significant environmental advantages.
LPG and natural gas are two distinct gases with different chemical compositions. Natural gas primarily consists of methane, whereas LPG, also known as liquefied petroleum gas, is typically composed of propane or butane and is commonly sold in bottles. The main difference between Propane and Butane is their boiling point. Propane can handle much lower temperatures and is therefore used in homes with outdoor stages. Butane is better stored indoors as it does not function as effectively in cold climates. However, butane will produce more energy than propane above freezing making it a more efficient fuel.
Propane is a versatile fuel source that is utilised in a variety of applications, including powering and heating homes, water heaters, buses, forklifts, automobiles, outboard boat motors, and ice-resurfacing machines. Additionally, it is commonly used for heating and cooking in recreational vehicles and powering refrigeration. Its widespread use can be attributed to its effectiveness in colder climates. Butane is commonly used as a fuel for cigarette lighters and portable stoves, as a propellant in aerosols, as a heating fuel, as a refrigerant, and in the manufacturing of various products.
One notable advantage of LPG is its higher energy content compared to natural gas, making it a more efficient and cost-effective option in many cases. This difference in energy content can result in significant savings for consumers who choose to use LPG over natural gas.
